Owens Corning – Material Substitution

ChallengeWasher Study3_sm:

Owens Corning is a manufacturer of glass reinforcements for thermoset and thermoplastic materials. Reinforced plastics are used in product assemblies because they impart a range of properties like improved strength to weight ration, corrosion resistance, and electrical insulators that are highly valued in many markets. But increased growth and proliferation can be difficult because the number of processes and material formulations are almost endless.

Solution:

Understanding how to design for and use composites to their best advantage can be illustrated if the product team (marketing, engineering, materials suppliers and manufacturing) collaborate in a product review. Owens Corning hired Design Network to participate in “tear-downs” of appliance products to investigate and document opportunities for improved use of reinforced plastic parts. Design Network then created 3D sketch models to illustrate design approaches based on those findings.
